The Vietnam War rages. Bombs fall and the world erupts in protest. Back at the Tiki Club in St Kilda, four sisters from country Victoria—Gail, Kay, Cynthia and Julie—catch the attention of a big-city talent scout with their Supremes-inspired sound. But for the MacCrae girls, the chance to perform overseas isn’t quite what they imagined…
Based on the remarkable true story of writer Tony Briggs’ mother, The Sapphires traces how these fierce and fabulous Yorta Yorta women journeyed from their small-town beginnings to the frontlines of Vietnam, singing Motown classics for American soldiers and breaking barriers with every beat.
For more than 25 years, this multi-award-winning play—and the hit film it inspired—has captivated audiences around the world. Now The Sapphires returns to the Bille Brown Theatre in a sparkling new production, featuring the next generation of First Nations stars and led by original director and theatre icon Wesley Enoch.
Bursting with heart, dripping in sequins and driven by a swinging soundtrack that defined a generation, this story of women daring to go where others would not is a powerful cultural anthem celebrating the strength, solidarity and soul of First Nations sisterhood.
