Torch the Place
From Queensland born-and-bred writer and storyteller Benjamin Law (The Family Law) comes Torch the Place — a breakout comedy that’s as hilarious as it is deeply moving, exploring family, legacy and the things we hold onto… sometimes far too tightly.
Teresa’s mum can’t throw anything away. Not grudges. Not Princess Diana ashtrays. Not late-’90s Disney VHS tapes. She sees her modest Gold Coast home as a shrine to priceless memories. The problem? She’s not a curator — she’s a hoarder.
When her adult children return to celebrate her 60th birthday, she’s overjoyed. But this homecoming isn’t just a family reunion — it’s an intervention. Armed with a skip bin, fragile optimism and decades of unresolved feelings, the siblings attempt to help their mother confront a lifetime of clutter, rusted-on emotions and long-buried memories.
Inspired by Law’s own family experiences and Australia’s rapidly growing issue of compulsive hoarding, Torch the Place balances razor-sharp wit with a deeply emotional reckoning around trauma, identity and the true meaning of “stuff.”
Directed by Queensland’s own Ngọc Phan (Vietgone, Boy Swallows Universe) in her mainstage solo-directing debut, and starring an ensemble you’ll fall head-over-heels for, Torch the Place is a “poignant modern comedy” (Arts Review) that “will make you laugh, cry, and call your mum” (ArtsHub).
